... . Jones: W. M. Davies, E. Salamy, H. W Horn, L. G. Mills, trustees. .... Jones: W. M. Davies, E. Salamy, H. W Horn, L. G. Mills, trustees ...Ellerslie Hall was established in Warrnambool in 1889, as one of the first private schools of the time. Apart from use as a private college, the hall housed the first classrooms of the Warrnambool High School (then Warrnambool Agricultural High School) for a period in 1907 then went on to be established as the home of the 3rd Warrnambool Scout Troup... in the 1920’s which had associations with the Toc H movement. The hall was also the location of the first Lutheran services in Warrnambool from 1933. In more recent years the property has been used as a residence and for office use. In 2023 the hall is being used by the Sanctuary Church. This journal represents a link to an important International movement, the Toc H movement. One of the founders, Tubby Clayton, visited Warrnambool in 1925 and again in 1952 when he stayed with Sir David Fletcher Jones who considered him one of the greatest spiritual influences in his life. Along with this journal donated by the Swinton family is a collection of photographs of Toc H members. Bottle green card cover with maroon cloth spine. Ninety five pages lined and columned. Handwritten cash book entries for Ellerslie hall accounts and Toc H at the front and journal entries towards the back. There are two loose sheets of paper at the back of the book, one containing a list of names and promised donations and the second, Toc H prayer and principles. Document - Warrnambool. Woodford. Winslow. Purnim Race Books, Modern Print, W’Bool, Victoria, 1920's and 1930's
... Forbes, C T Alexander A H Davies and William White... club books have R U Forbes, C T Alexander A H Davies ...The Warrnambool Amateur Turf Club was first formed in September 1859, but didn't become a properly constituted club until April 1873, when a meeting was held at the Commercial Hotel, now the Whaler's Inn, and a committee was elected.Part of the present racecourse of 100 acres was set aside as a racing and recreation reserve in August 1855. It is one of the finest racecourses in Australia, ringed by the gentle slopes of a huge basin. The first race meeting was held on the course in August 1858. The Warrnambool Racing Club has managed racing at Warrnambool since it was formed on 5 April 1873.Apart from a number of smaller meetings held throughout the year, the feature of racing in the district is the Grand Annual Steeplechase. The first steeplechase over the now famous cross-country course was run on 13th June 1872 then known as the Grand Annual Steeplechase. The paddocks now know as Brierly and Granters were first used on that date. The course, over four miles, was made up of different kinds of jumps including a stone wall, a log fence, a ditch and parapet, a paling fence and numerous post and rails. The name Grand Annual was first used for this steeplechase in May 1895. It is the longest horse race in Australia, and the thirty three fences of the course, the most of any steeplechase in the world is raced over 5,500 metres. The three day May racing carnival is the major racing event on the horseracing and social calendar. Many of these race booklets relate to those May meetings. The Warrnambool Racecourse has been the home of district racing clubs such as Woodford, Purnim and Koroit over the latter part of the 20th century. The Woodford Racing club holds their annual meeting after Christmas each year. The Winslow races were held from approximately mid-19th century to around 1946. It began as a small picnic race club in Tobin’s paddock to a splendid race course on the property, “Green Hills” owned by Mr. John O’Keefe about one mile north of the Winslow township.. The annual meetings held on New Year’s Day drew crowds of seven to eight thousand people. All of these books contains family names which in some cases are still strongly linked to horse racing in the district. These booklets are a tangible link to a great sporting and social event in the Western District. A collection of programmes for race meetings. They relate to Warrnambool, Woodford, Purnim, Winslow and Victoria Racing Club meetings in the period 1922 to 1931. All are soft card covers with approximately 16 pages in each in white paper. Posters – Set of 3 A4 posters depicting the early days and people in the Kiewa Valley
... – Sources: B Roper, W Davies, D Higginson, H Ryder. Handwritten... – Sources: B Roper, W Davies, D Higginson, H Ryder. Handwritten ...In the 1830’s, European pastoralists started moving south from NSW into the Alps. In 1836, cattle grazing began around Omeo and the runs spread out into the foothills. The higher country was used for summer grazing and huts were built for shelter and storage during stock mustering. The lure of gold brought many people to the Alps from around 1850 to 1900. Bushfires destroyed the forests around Melbourne in 1939 and the boom in house-building after World War II ked to increased demand for timber from the Alps. This resulted in the building of a network of roads which helped open up access to the Alps. The early 1940’s brought the first of many workers to the Alps for the planning and construction of the Hydro-Electric Scheme. These were the pioneers and early settlers of the Kiewa Valley and provided a wealth of characters and a tapestry of stories and adventures to be handed down to future generations. These 3 posters, which were most likely produced for promotional purposes provide a glimpse into the early lives of the pioneer families of the Kiewa Valley through pictures and verse. They show their lifestyle and outline the hardships they had to endure in living and working in the Alpine region. They also highlight the early arguments regarding grazing in the high country which would ultimately lead to the end of the long traditions of the high country cattle men. Set of 3 A4 size posters with black and white photographs and text and colour background depicting various parts of the history of the Kiewa Valley. 1. Titled - ‘Life wasn’t meant to be easy’ Describes early life for Kiewa Hydro workers. 2. Titled - ‘Cattlemen of the High Plains’ Describes a brief history of life of the cattlemen of the high plains 3. Titled – ‘There are Places I’ll remember’ Depicts early photographs of residents of the Kiewa Valley, also includes the words from a John Lennon song as per poster title. Ballarat Clarendon College
Blazer pocket
This blazer pocket is from Ann (Price) Royal's Clarendon Presbyterian Ladies College blazer. Ann attended CPLC 1947 - 1957. Blazer pockets were embroidered with the school crest and additional embroidery was added during a student's years at College to reflect school colours and leadership roles. School colours were awarded for participation and leadership in various sport, house and academic pursuits. Ann's pocket, and the accompanying authorisation receipt reflect her receipt of the following awards: Athletics Colours (1952 - 1957), Hockey Colours (1954 - 1957) , Cairns House colours, school colours (1957) as well as leadership roles as Prefect (1957), House Captain (1957) and Sports Captain (1956). Students removed their pockets after graduation to keep as a momento of their school years. The authorisation receipt indicates that Ann's family chose not to have the final embroidery for Aths 1957, Hockey 1957 added to the pocket - probably because these awards would have been identified at the end of Ann's final school year. Significant reflection of school focus and individual attainmentBrown felt blazer pocket with braid across opening and embroidered crest and achievements; bottle green braid piece, multi-coloured braid piece; completed authorisation receipt for pocket embroidery made out to Harry Davies and Co Pty Ltd.
